Jack the Giant Slayer – Movie Review

Jack the Giant Slayer is an American fantasy based adventure movie, directed by Bryan Singer and written by Darren Lemke, Christopher McQuarrie and Dan Studney. It is based on the stories of “Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘Jack the Giant Killer’. The story is about saving Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) from the giants by Jack (Nicholas Hoult), a farmer.

The story is plotted like this; Jack is admired by a great leader Erik, who defeated the giants from a world up in the sky. At the same time, Isabelle is also fascinated by this legendary hero. Jack is in love with the princess when he saves her from a group of thugs.

Meanwhile jack went to the market to sell his horse, so that he could help his uncle but instead of trading against some money, he traded his horse with some magical beans, which were stolen from Lord Roderick (Stanley Tucci). This act of Jack made his uncle very angry and he threw away the beans.

Back at the castle, the princess showed her interest of exploring the kingdom to her father King Brahmwell (Ian McShane) but he refuses and insisted her to get married to Lord Roderick. She couldn’t stand that and ran away from her castle. As it started raining she found a shelter in Jack’s home, but she wasn’t aware that this shelter would became her worst nightmare. One of the beans grew into a huge beanstalk and it took the house away from the ground into the sky, along with princess, but Jack luckily fell down.

Jack’s crush on the princess made him a part of the king’s knights. Lord Roderick and his assistant Wicke also joined the king’s army. This army was led by Elmont (Ewan McGregor). They climbed up the tree in search of the princess and reached the horrible realm of the giants. They distributed themselves in two groups, one with Lord Roderick and his companion Wicke and the other with Jack, Elmont and his second in-command Crawe (Eddie Marsan).

After distributing into two groups, both the groups faced the giant beasts. Wicke was eaten by a giant and as the giant could hunt Roderick down, he did a magic trick and saved himself from that giant. Whereas the other group also had to face a giant beast, but they were imprisoned except for Jack.

Jack followed that giant who took Elmont and Crawe. There he found the leader of the giants, General Fallon (Bill Nighy) a two-headed giant. There Crawe was killed by this two-headed beast, but Jack was able to find the princess and Elmont imprisoned. As these creatures were about to hunt the rest of the group members, Roderick walked in and took the control over these giants by showing them the magical crown. He allowed the giants to eat Elmont and the princess and also made an alliance with them to attack the kingdom of king Brahmwell at dawn.

Meanwhile Jack was able to rescue the princess and Elmont from the giants. As they reached the beanstalk, they found a giant guarding it, but anyhow Jack was able to kill that giant by making that beast fall down. Down at the ground, the giant fell and died. His body made the people horrified and the king ordered to chop down the tree for any attacks from these monsters.

Jack and Isabelle headed towards their homeland but Elmont returned to face lord Roderick and claimed the remaining beans, which were taken by Roderick from Jack. But he was not able to do so, as the leader of the giants Fallon took the magical crown from Roderick, and Elmont had no choice but to run away to save himself. He, along with the princess and Jack, was able to reach Colister.

With the remaining beans in the hands of the giants, Jack knew that they will create the beanstalk again and will attack Colister, so he warned everyone in order to protect themselves. They arranged a way to defeat those giants. Elmont filled the moat with oil and lit that with fire. Fallon chased them back to the castle and fell down the moat but was able to survive this and managed to enter the castle. He captured the princess and Jack but then Jack made his final move, he threw the last bean into Fallon’s throat and made him swallow it and there that bean grew into a beanstalk ripping off Fallon into parts.

As the leader died, Jack made the rest of the giants to go back to their realm. He was now the hero of his dreams and married his love Princess Isabelle.
