7 Aspects of Photography Every Professional Photographer Must Never Ignore

Whether you take photography as an art or a science there are some basics you need to get straight. Had that not been the case, we wouldn’t have been seeing university degrees for this field. It doesn’t matter if you are professional or a mere hobbyist, if you don’t exhibit quality work you won’t get acceptance. Photography has a large number of types including portrait photography, wildlife photography, wedding photography, landscape photography, fine art photography etc. No matter which type of photographer you are there are some common tools and techniques you must be equipped with. Here is a short list of basic photography skills and techniques that can help you in the long run if you want to become a professional photographer:

Camera Selection

The fundamental weapon of a photographer is a camera. You should be well versed with the type of lenses available and which ones will be required in your niche. You need to know the differences between various types of cameras and how you use them differently. Point and shoot cameras will suffice for everyday life photography but as a professional photographer you need to have a command on the usage of DSLRs.

You should be able to control different parameters in photography. For example, shutter speed, aperture, contrast, brightness etc. Know which mode will be suitable on different occasions. You are also required to know how to hold the camera for different types of photography. Setting the camera in auto mode is easier but you can’t control it in the desired manner. For manual settings you need to have the required experience and know how to get the desired results.

Photo Editing

A good photographer is the one who can bring life in seemingly dull or meaningless pictures. You need to know how to use different photo editing software like Photoshop, how to add typography and select the type of typography required. A photographer should also be familiar with color correction and touch ups so they won’t let a client down on occassions.

Selling Photography

These days there is a very small percentage of photographers who shoot just for fun. Economic recession also explains this trend as people are short of money. There are a number of stock photo websites where you can sell pictures for money. Some of them also provide valuable feedback to help improve your skills, so grab the opportunity rather than letting your photos collect dust inside your computer.

Miscellaneous Equipment

A tripod is must if you want to capture high quality photographs. The biggest advantage it offers is the reduction in blur. You should be aware of the batteries, storage devices and other accessories so that you can quickly find an alternate, in case you don’t have a backup.

Copyrights

A good photographer knows his rights and should be aware of the various practices regarding copyrights. Different website award licenses to the photo buyers on the basis of the conditions written under various labels of copyright types.

Maintaining Portfolio Website

A professional photographer should have a face on the internet by creating or owning a portfolio website. S/he should lay down the previous work. Give samples of their work and make sure that high quality, best images are posted. A section for contact information should also be reserved so that employers can find you easily.

A good photographer not only needs to be skillful technically but should also be able to market his/her skills to earn from their work.
