10 Travel Apps That Will Make Your Journey More Fun

There must be an easier way to travel, right? There must be an application that can make the process less stressful and can make the journey more fun. There is! In fact we’ve found 10 that we think will be beneficial to most people travelling with a smart-device. We hope you find some nice Android & iOS apps that will help and improve your travelling experience.

Hipmunk-Flight-Hotel-SearchHipmunk

Hipmunk is one of the most respected and well known services out on the mobile platform. An initial positive is that it is available for iPad, iPhone, Android devices and they have a website too so you can search for your flights whichever platform you want to use.

Hipmunk essentially allows you to find the cheapest route to the destination you want to go using plenty of different choices of airplane companies. On top of that, Hipmunk allows you the ability to see the most pain-free journey with the least amount of stops on your journey. It’s an application to simply get the best possible flight route for the least amount of money to your destination.

PFLogoPlane Finder

Plane Finder is a really clever application that keeps you up to date with live flights going on in the world right now. That means if you’re bored on the plane and want to know how close you are to your destination you can. Or if a family member or friend are on a plane and you’re not, you can track where they currently are to see how close they are to arriving. It’s an interesting application that can either be a time killer or a tracking application.

PackPoint is a really intuitive, fun and clever application to make your packing list a little easier. Simply put, PackPoint tells you what to pack so you don’t have to. And it is available for both Android and iOS.

The process of PackPoint is that you insert where you’re going, when, how long for and whether it’s for leisure or for work. Next you select which activities you plan on doing out there such as hiking, photography, swimming etc. Once you’ve filled out this simple information, it will then generate a list of items you should pack. For example, if you are planning on hiking and taking images in the Alps, it will suggest warm clothes, a camera, tripod and hiking boots. It’s a clever application and one that could end up helping and reminding you of things you may have forgotten otherwise.

IMG_0078TripIt

TripIt is the perfect application for those that find travelling stressful due to all the documentation and clutter they have to print out or add into separate apps on their phone to access. TripIt will take all your hotel bookings, flights and more and allow you to view it in one “Master Itinery” which will allow you to access everything you need in chronological order on your personal device.

You forward all your documentation over to a certain email address and then it is “automagically” generated into one streamlined interface that allows you to see everything you need to make sure you get to and from your hotel without any problems. It’s an intuitive idea and one we can imagine would be very beneficial for the busy businessman or woman who can’t be bothered with all the clutter of extra documentation.

uberUber

Everyone knows the application Uber by now, it’s a brilliant and forward-thinking application that offers up an on-demand taxi service like no other. It is currently limited in it’s city selection but if you’re travelling to any major cities within the US or UK then this application is a must.

For those people who don’t know what Uber can do. It is an application you can download on your phone that you can use to easy and quickly order a taxi with some personal information such as reviews of taxi drivers and their GPS location. It’s a great application for those who often find themselves needing transport whilst away.

Instagram-LogoInstagram

Everybody has heard of application and you may ask the question as to how it counts as a travelling application. But what if you’re travelling with your friends or family and want to take images and share them onto the most popular image social media service available?

Well then there’s simply no better application for uploading, basic editing and sharing your personal photos with others than Instagram. We all know it offers some lovely filters that allow you to add a touch of class to your images along with the ability to automatically share these images to other social networks.

google-now-cardsGoogle Search/Google Now

This one may be a bit a curve-ball as it’s something that is automatically built into Android phones and is also not an application dedicated to travel. Simply put, Google Now offers you up cards of information related to your location, emails you’ve received or terms you’ve searched.

Therefore when it comes to travelling to other locations, it can show you local hotspots based on your location such as restaurants, view points and places people have taken a lot of photos. It’s a great companion to have when travelling.

Foursquare2014.svgFourSquare

FourSquare is an application that has been out of the limelight lately but it still offers the best way to find new restaurants and things to do when travelling in a new city. The latest FourSquare update removed the ability to check in and made it more of an application to help you find places to eat and enjoy yourself.

You can search for restaurants in the application based on your preferences such as burgers, pizzas, pasta or maybe based on certain food sorts. It’s a great companion application especially for those that like to dine out whilst they’re away.

iPhone2Google Maps

I’m sure you’re surprised we’ve not included a Sat-Nav application for travel yet as I’m sure a lot of people will be looking for the best one. When it comes to price and reliability, there’s simply no better options than Google Maps right now.

Not only is Google Maps free but it offers one of the most robust satellite navigation systems you can get on a smartphone including voice navigation, constantly updated maps, satellite views and more. It surpasses the Apple Maps in reliability and features.

ta_logo_tagline_tm_rgbTripAdvisor

What about if you’re looking to see what others think of the hotel you’re looking at booking? Well then TripAdvisor will give you great reviews. Yelp is another choice, but we prefer TripAdivsor as it is supported by a lot of companies and it allows for great user-uploaded images to show you what the website looks like from a customer stand-point, rather than the Photoshopped images that Hotels will upload.

There’s an application for both iOS and Android, but it’s all built off the website which offers great and hoenst reviews of thousands of hotels, villas and more across the world. It’s definitely worth checking out either before you book your holiday or after to have to a look at pictures of the place you’re staying.

  1. Great list! I’m also using a navigation app Spyglass that supports different maps, depending on my current needs: google maps, apple maps, open street map and open cycle map. It’s also very important that the app can read pre-downloaded maps when offline. Besides, it has many useful features for those people that are not very good at orienting. The app shows your current position on the map, can save waypoints and locations, for example, your car or your hotel location, and share your locations with friends. https://itunes.apple.com/app/spyglass/id332639548?mt=8&at=11lLc7&ct=c
